Summary Seven handwritten letters with envelopes (1918 July 24, August 14, September 12, November 1; 1919 March 24, March 27, July 23) and two postcards (1919 March 17, March 20) addressed to Miss Bernice Ford or to her mother, Mrs. F. S. Ford. Sam Long served in France during World War I and his censored communications discuss his travels, daily living conditions in the army, some activities, and personal matters. There are also three enclosures: a mimeographed program of a Franco-American Independence Day concert celebration held at Chiviens, France (letter of 1918 July 24); an unused postcard with an image of the church at Lourdes; and a copy of "The Pyrenees Bulletin", a news leaflet published by the YMCA (letter of 1919 March 27).
